Recycling in single-family homes, duplexes and tri-plexes
Global warming is real, is happening now, and poses a serious threat to the world’s future. But what can we do to help reduce global warming other than blaming and talking about it? One simple and immediate action we can take is to recycle more. We can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling half of our household waste.

Miami-Dade County's waste reduction and recycling programs have been designed to reduce waste generation and maximize recyclable material recovery. Collection is provided to single-family homes, duplexes, tri-plexes and some cluster homes in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and the cities of Aventura, Biscayne Park, El Portal, Florida City, Medley, Miami Beach, Miami Springs, North Bay Village, Opa-Locka, Pinecrest, South Miami, Sunny Isles, Surfside, Sweetwater, West Miami and Virginia Gardens.

ACTION: Requesting recycling bins for participating homes is now easy. Fill out the form you’ll find by opening the link below and submit!

Recycling in apartments and condominiums
There are over 10,000 apartment and condominium buildings in Miami-Dade County. The Department of Solid Waste Management estimates that each year, these multi-family establishments produce 700,000 tons of solid waste -- just under 25% of the total waste generated in the County.

To maximize the amount of waste that is diverted from disposal, Miami-Dade County has a law which requires all rental property owners and condominium associations to provide recycling programs.

ACTION: If you live in apartments and condominiums please ask your rental property owner and condominium association whether they have recycling programs in place, and if not, “encourage” them to do so.

Recycling in businesses
Commercial establishments in Miami-Dade County produce an estimated 1.7 million tons of solid waste annually -- more than 50% of the total waste generated countywide. Managing this waste stream through recycling and waste reduction is good for South Florida's environment, but it also makes good business sense. Evaluating how your company is producing waste can uncover organizational inefficiencies -- some of which may be costly. Further, an environmentally responsive approach to managing solid waste can enhance your company's image. But, if these reasons aren't convincing enough, you should know that commercial recycling is also required by law.

One of the companies that have implemented a successful recycling program is Publix.

ACTION: For more information on Publix’s recycling program, please contact its Miami Recycling Center at 305.652.241, ext 2937 and ask for Jose Diez. Publix welcomes anyone interested to visit its Miami Recycling Center located at Miami Gardens Drive, 100 NE 183rd Street, Miami FL, 33179. You can learn how the recycling process works, watch relevant videos and learn best practices.

Another company is Office Depot who has launched a waste reduction & recycling program at their corporate headquarters that targets more than 80% of the waste stream.
