This home constructed in 1972 is an extremely sound residence as a result of the Frank Lloyd Wright construction and styling methods. The house is constructed of brick and wood and the best materials available on the market during the construction. The architect made painstaking drawings of this home in order to make certain of its finished quality.
The quality can be observed in the wood work, mostly 1” x 2” tongue and groove for the roof, ceilings and floors. The walls are mostly matching wood paneling which matches nicely to the tongue and groove used throughout the house. The house ends are made of 10” x 3” bricks with precision mortar joints which are representative of the Frank Lloyd Wright style.
The Frank Lloyd Wright styling in this house is omnipresent. This is easily observed in the layout of the house and the orientation to the earth. The Layout consists of two equal sized bed rooms upstairs which are both open with floor to ceiling glass. The downstairs is a combination kitchen and family area essentially equal in size to the two bedrooms above. The Family area and kitchen also enjoys floor to ceiling glass which makes the area feel open and spacious.
Further, the house is a split level house. The owner enters at the halfway stair point and goes up to the bedrooms or down to the kitchen/family area. This means that the downstairs in 1/2 underground. This is part of the styling but more importantly affects the efficiency of the home. The home is situated EXACTLY due east. This means that the mornings are full of warm sunshine through glass eastern facing side of the house and the evenings when the sun is hot the home is hidden by the cool earth and few glass windows.
Also, the bedrooms both have doors which lead to a deck on the upper level with a staircase to the expansive patio on the main level. All of which overlook tranquil Lake Wilburn.
The original building plans are available and demonstrate the elaborate details created for the construction of this truly fine home.
“So here I stand before you preaching organic architecture: declaring organic architecture to be the modern ideal and the teaching so much needed if we are to see the whole of life, and to now serve the whole of life, holding no ‘traditions’ essential to the great TRADITION. Nor cherishing any preconceived form fixing upon us either past, present or future, but—instead—exalting the simple laws of common sense—or of super-sense if you prefer—determining form by way of the nature of materials...”
— Frank Lloyd Wright, An Organic Architecture, 1939
